Wreaths are placed on the memorial and prayers are spoken, followed by a 2 minute silence to honor and remember all the martyrs of the country.
While the attention of the day is on the struggle for liberation, it can also act as an inspiration for marginalized people to never give up fighting and for all of us to continue Gandhi’s ethos, which includes non-violence as a means of resolving conflict and silencing hate.
Palestine: Martyrs’ Day (January 1)
In Palestine, Martyrs’ Day is celebrated on January the 1st every year in order to commemorate the lives of the Palestinian martyrs who were killed during the struggle for Palestinian independence. There are sevelal events held in Palestine and by Palestinians around the world on this day to remember those who have died in the age old conflict with Israel as well as those who have died fighting for the freedom of Palestine from occupation. The day is a reminder of the deep emotional scars borne by the Palenstinian populace.
Several events are conducted by the Palestinian government and other political groups to pay their respect to the fallen soldiers. Memorial Day in the United States is loosely termed as Martyrs’ Day, which falls on the last Monday of May. This day observes the honor dedicated to the people who lost their lives serving in the military. As the name denotes, this day was originally known as Decoration Day post-civil war and has evolved into a national holiday marked by parades, ceremonies, and moments of silence in the remembrance of deceased soldiers.
